St Andrews, Falkland & Fife Fishing Villages Day Trip from Edinburgh

See reviews

Description

The home of golf, beautiful beaches and the best fish and chips in Scotland: what more could you want from a day out? Explore the Kingdom of Fife and discover its fascinating history and wonderful scenery.

This St Andrews tour from Edinburgh crosses the Firth of Forth to Falkland, a village where time seems to have stood still and an Outlander filming location, before giving you ample time to explore St Andrews at your own pace.

In St Andrews you can walk the Old Course on certain days, see the university where Prince William and Kate Middleton met, climb St Rule's Tower, explore the castle ruins or stroll West Sands, as seen in Chariots of Fire.

We finish in the East Neuk, an often-forgotten corner of Fife with historic fishing villages and dramatic coastal scenery, and sample the famous fish and chips of Anstruther.

Detailed route

After a stop in Falkland, enjoy free time in St Andrews to explore at your own pace.

We finish in the fishing villages of the East Neuk, arriving at the drop-off point in St Andrew Square at around 5.30 pm.

Departure from Edinburgh (9.30 am)

Forth Rail Bridge

Opened in 1890, this triple-cantilever masterpiece of Victorian engineering took nearly 4,000 men three and a half years to build. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 and was voted Scotland's greatest man-made wonder in 2016.

Falkland

Outlander fans will recognise it as post-war Inverness, with the Bruce Fountain where Claire sees Jamie's ghost. Browse the craft shops or take the optional visit to Falkland Palace and Gardens, favourite retreat of the Stuart kings and of Mary, Queen of Scots.

St Andrews

The highlight of the tour. Visit the spiritual home of golf and the Himalayas mini golf course, St Salvator's Quad at the third-oldest university in the English-speaking world, the cathedral and St Rule's Tower, the castle, the pier, West Sands or the aquarium.

Anstruther and the East Neuk

Photograph the working harbour, browse the independent shops and coffee shops and sample Anstruther's famous fish and chips. Out to sea lies the Isle of May, a national nature reserve of seabirds and seals.

Drop-off at St Andrew Square (5.30 pm)

The order of the stops may change because of traffic, weather or opening times.
