Terms and conditions

Last updated: October 2026

In short

  • Free tours cost nothing upfront: guides work for tips and you give what you think the tour was worth.
  • Regular paid tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start.
  • Private tours: 80% refund if cancelled at least 7 full days in advance.
  • Pub crawls and alcohol experiences are for over-18s only and you must bring valid photo ID.
  • Please arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes before the start time.
  • None of this affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

1. About us

These terms and conditions govern bookings for, and participation in, the activities offered by:

Edbabel Ltd, a company registered in Scotland under number SC481324, trading as City Explorers Tours.

Registered office:
5 South Charlotte Street
Edinburgh, Scotland
EH2 4AN

Email:
info@cityexplorerstours.com

In these terms, “City Explorers Tours”, “Edbabel Ltd”, “we”, “us” or “the company” refer to Edbabel Ltd.

By completing a booking, the customer confirms that they have read and accept these terms and conditions.

Where a person books on behalf of other participants, they are responsible for providing accurate information and for passing these terms on to everyone in the group.

These terms do not affect the rights that consumers have under applicable law.

2. Scope

These terms apply to regular tours, free (tip-based) tours, private tours, pub crawls, alcohol experiences, day trips and any other activity organised by City Explorers Tours.

Some activities may be subject to additional conditions. Where specific conditions apply, they will be shown to the customer before the booking is completed.

3. Free tours (tip-based)

Our free tours have no upfront price. Guides work exclusively on tips, and each participant decides freely whether to tip and how much, according to their experience.

Booking a free tour is free of charge and gives you priority if the tour reaches capacity. Without a booking, you may join if places are available.

Free tours are open to groups of up to 12 people. Groups of more than 12 people — even if they make several separate bookings — will not be accepted at the meeting point and should book a private tour.

If you can no longer attend, please cancel or change your booking from your confirmation email so that the place can be offered to someone else.

4. Bookings and confirmation

A booking is confirmed once City Explorers Tours or an authorised sales platform has issued a confirmation by email or other written means.

The customer must check that the following details are correct:

  • The activity booked.
  • Date and time.
  • Meeting point.
  • Number of participants.
  • Number and ages of any children, where applicable.
  • Contact details.
  • Amount paid, where the activity requires advance payment.

The customer must inform City Explorers Tours as soon as possible of any error.

City Explorers Tours will not be liable for consequences arising directly from false, incomplete or incorrect information provided by the customer, unless there has been negligence or a breach on the part of Edbabel Ltd.

We may cancel or refuse a booking where incorrect information has been provided that affects the safety, legality or suitability of the activity.

5. Prices and payment

Applicable prices, deposits, supplements and payment terms will be shown before the booking is completed.

Private tours must be paid in accordance with the terms set out in the relevant confirmation or quote.

The customer is responsible for checking the total amount before making payment.

City Explorers Tours will not apply any additional charges that have not been communicated in advance.

Where payment is made through a third-party platform, it may be subject to that platform’s payment systems and terms.

6. Tickets and resale

Tickets and bookings are only valid for the activity, date, time and number of participants shown in the confirmation.

Bookings may not be resold or used for commercial purposes without the prior written consent of City Explorers Tours.

City Explorers Tours may ask the lead booker to show the confirmation email and, where necessary, a form of identification.

7. Cancellation of regular tours

Bookings for regular paid tours may be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time.

If the cancellation is made within that period, the customer will receive a full refund of the amount paid.

Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the start of the activity are non-refundable, unless applicable law provides otherwise.

Late arrivals and no-shows are also non-refundable.

Subject to availability, City Explorers Tours may offer a change of date as an alternative. Any change is subject to confirmation and is not an automatic right.

8. Cancellation of private tours

Private tours cancelled at least 7 full days in advance will receive a refund of 80% of the amount paid.

The remaining 20% will be retained to cover the administrative, organisational and availability costs of preparing and reserving the service.

Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance are non-refundable, unless applicable law provides otherwise.

Subject to availability, City Explorers Tours may allow a change of date. Any change is subject to confirmation and may incur additional costs where it involves changing the services booked, the number of guides or costs already incurred.

If City Explorers Tours is able to reallocate the reserved resources and reduce the losses caused by the cancellation, this may be taken into account when calculating any additional refund.

9. Bookings made through third-party platforms

Bookings made through third-party platforms or distributors must be changed or cancelled through the same channel used to make the booking.

Such bookings are subject to the cancellation and refund policy shown to the customer before completing the purchase.

Where a third-party platform handles payment directly, any refund must initially be processed through that platform.

Nothing in this section limits the customer’s statutory rights.

10. Cancellations by City Explorers Tours

City Explorers Tours may cancel an activity where there are reasonable grounds preventing it from going ahead, including:

  • Safety concerns.
  • Unexpected illness or unavailability of the guide.
  • Adverse weather conditions.
  • Closure of, or restricted access to, venues or spaces.
  • Serious transport disruption.
  • Circumstances beyond the company’s reasonable control.
  • Insufficient participants, where it has been stated that the activity requires a minimum number.

If City Explorers Tours cancels a paid activity, the customer may choose to:

  • Move the booking to another available date.
  • Accept an alternative activity of equivalent value.
  • Receive a full refund of the amount paid to City Explorers Tours for the cancelled activity.

Unless applicable law provides otherwise, City Explorers Tours will not be liable for indirect costs or separate bookings such as transport, flights, accommodation or meals.

11. Changes to the activity

The route, duration, timings, venues and content of an activity may be changed for reasonable reasons, including:

  • Weather conditions.
  • Roadworks or street closures.
  • Access restrictions.
  • Safety concerns.
  • Venue capacity.
  • Public events.
  • Transport disruption.
  • Circumstances beyond the reasonable control of City Explorers Tours.

We will endeavour to keep the essential elements and quality of the experience.

If, before the start, a substantial change significantly alters a paid activity, the customer may choose between accepting the alternative offered or requesting the corresponding refund.

Minor changes to the route, the order of stops or the venues do not automatically give rise to a refund.

12. Punctuality and no-shows

Participants must arrive at the meeting point shown in the confirmation at least 10 minutes before the start time.

Activities start at the advertised time. Once the tour has set off, it may not always be possible to locate or join the group later.

Late arrivals or no-shows attributable to the participant are non-refundable.

The customer is responsible for checking the meeting point in advance and allowing enough time to get there.

13. Children

Under-18s may take part in tours that do not include adult-only experiences, provided they are accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult throughout the activity.

The accompanying adult is responsible for the supervision and behaviour of the child.

The person making the booking must correctly state the number and ages of any children when asked.

City Explorers Tours may refuse participation where:

  • The child is not accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Incorrect information has been given about their age.
  • The activity is not suitable for the participant’s age.
  • Their participation could breach a legal obligation or a rule of the venue visited.

14. Pub crawls and alcohol experiences

Activities that include visits to bars, pubs or nightclubs, or the consumption of alcohol, are strictly for participants aged 18 and over.

Participants must carry an official, original, valid photo ID, such as:

  • Passport.
  • Driving licence.
  • National identity card.
  • Other documents accepted by the venue.

Photographs, photocopies and documents that are altered, expired or belong to someone else will not be accepted.

Venues may apply their own ID and admission policies, including Challenge 25.

City Explorers Tours cannot guarantee entry where a participant is unable to prove their age. Refusal of entry due to lack of valid ID does not give rise to a refund.

15. Responsible drinking

Drinking alcohol is always optional. Nobody is required to drink in order to take part in an activity.

Each participant is responsible for their own consumption and for acting in accordance with their personal circumstances.

City Explorers Tours promotes responsible drinking and may ask a person to stop drinking or to leave the activity where there are reasonable grounds relating to safety, behaviour or the wellbeing of the group.

City Explorers Tours will not be liable for consequences arising solely from a participant’s voluntary or excessive consumption of alcohol, unless those consequences were caused or worsened by the negligence or breach of Edbabel Ltd.

16. Right of admission and behaviour

Participants must behave respectfully and follow the reasonable instructions of guides, City Explorers Tours representatives and venue staff.

City Explorers Tours may refuse participation or remove from the activity anyone whose behaviour may endanger their own safety or that of other participants or staff. This includes, among other things:

  • Excessive intoxication.
  • Aggressive, threatening or abusive behaviour.
  • Discriminatory or antisocial conduct.
  • Harassment of other participants, guides or third parties.
  • Possession or use of illegal substances.
  • Damage to property or premises.
  • Repeated failure to follow safety instructions.
  • Serious disruption of the activity.

Where a participant is removed because of their behaviour, no refund will be given.

City Explorers Tours will consider the specific circumstances and act reasonably and proportionately.

17. Independent venues and suppliers

Bars, pubs, nightclubs, attractions and other venues visited during an activity are independent businesses and retain their own rules and right of admission.

Participants must comply with their requirements regarding ID, dress code, behaviour, opening hours and safety.

City Explorers Tours is not liable for an independent decision taken by a venue, unless that situation was caused by the negligence or breach of Edbabel Ltd.

Where necessary, City Explorers Tours may replace a venue with a reasonably similar one.

18. Health and fitness to take part

Each participant should assess whether they are physically and mentally fit to take part in the activity. Our walking tours involve slopes, steps and uneven or slippery surfaces.

Anyone with concerns about an injury, illness, pregnancy, medication or any other medical condition should seek advice from a healthcare professional beforehand.

Where relevant to safety or to the organisation of the activity, participants should tell City Explorers Tours about any particular needs, without having to disclose more medical information than is strictly necessary.

City Explorers Tours does not provide medical advice.

19. Accessibility

Participants who need assistance or adjustments relating to mobility, disability or other accessibility needs should contact City Explorers Tours as far in advance as possible.

City Explorers Tours will make reasonable efforts to facilitate their participation and will make appropriate adjustments in accordance with applicable law. The route may be adapted where reasonably possible.

Participation may only be refused or changed where reasonably necessary for safety reasons and no suitable adjustment would allow the activity to be carried out safely.

20. Weather and clothing

Unless stated otherwise, tours run in rain, cold, wind and the other weather conditions that are normal in Edinburgh.

Participants should wear clothing, footwear and protection suitable for the expected conditions and for walking on surfaces that may be uneven or slippery.

Normal weather conditions do not give rise to a refund where the activity can be carried out safely.

If conditions prevent the activity from being carried out reasonably safely, the policy on cancellations by City Explorers Tours will apply.

21. Personal belongings

Participants are responsible for looking after their belongings throughout the activity.

City Explorers Tours is not liable for items that are lost, left behind, stolen or damaged, unless the loss or damage was caused by the negligence or breach of Edbabel Ltd.

Items found may be kept for a reasonable period. The owner will be responsible for any postage or return costs.

22. Damage caused by participants

Participants are responsible for the direct and reasonable costs of any damage or loss they cause deliberately or negligently to:

  • Venues.
  • Equipment.
  • Vehicles.
  • Other participants.
  • Staff.
  • Third parties.

City Explorers Tours may provide a venue, insurer or authority with the information strictly necessary to deal with an incident, always in accordance with applicable law and its Privacy Policy.

23. Our liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits the liability of Edbabel Ltd for:

  • Death or personal injury caused by its negligence.
  • Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
  • Breach of rights that cannot legally be excluded.
  • Any other liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

To the extent permitted by law, Edbabel Ltd will not be liable for losses that:

  • Were not caused by an act or omission of the company.
  • Were not reasonably foreseeable when the booking was made.
  • Result from the voluntary, negligent or unlawful actions of the participant.
  • Result from false, incomplete or incorrect information provided by the customer.
  • Relate to costs or bookings that are separate from the activity booked.

These limitations do not affect the customer’s statutory rights.

24. Events beyond our control

City Explorers Tours will not be liable for delays, changes or failures caused by events beyond its reasonable control, such as:

  • Extreme weather.
  • Emergencies.
  • Official restrictions.
  • Strikes.
  • Serious transport disruption.
  • Civil unrest or security issues.
  • Unexpected closure of streets, spaces or venues.
  • Widespread failure of essential services.

In such situations, City Explorers Tours will make reasonable efforts to reduce the impact, keep customers informed and offer a suitable solution in line with these terms and the customer’s statutory rights.

25. Photographs and recordings

During some activities, City Explorers Tours may take photographs or make recordings to document the experience and promote its services.

Where photographs or recordings are planned, participants will be told in advance and offered a reasonable way to indicate that they do not wish to appear. Declining to appear will not affect a person’s ability to take part.

Where a person is the main, clearly identifiable subject of an image intended for advertising, social media, the website or promotional material, City Explorers Tours will ask for separate consent where necessary. Silence, lack of objection or general acceptance of these terms will not be treated as specific consent for close-ups or individual promotional images.

Photographs or recordings in which children are clearly identifiable will not be used for promotional purposes without the express consent of their parent or legal guardian.

Participants may ask how an image is being used, or withdraw their consent, by writing to info@cityexplorerstours.com. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any use made before the request was received, nor does it guarantee the immediate withdrawal of printed materials already in circulation.

26. Personal data

Edbabel Ltd processes the personal data of customers and participants in accordance with the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and its Privacy Policy.

The Privacy Policy explains:

  • What personal information Edbabel Ltd collects.
  • What it is used for.
  • The applicable legal basis.
  • How long it is kept.
  • Which providers or platforms it may be shared with.
  • Whether any international transfers take place.
  • How to exercise data protection rights.
  • How to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Privacy enquiries may be sent to info@cityexplorerstours.com.

27. Electronic communications

City Explorers Tours may use the contact details provided at the time of booking to:

  • Send the booking confirmation.
  • Notify changes or cancellations.
  • Provide the information needed to take part.
  • Respond to requests or complaints.
  • Process payments and refunds.

Marketing communications will only be sent where there is an appropriate legal basis and in line with the recipient’s preferences.

The customer must provide a correct email address and phone number and check their messages before the start of the activity.

28. Complaints

Wherever possible, any issue should be raised with the guide during the activity so that City Explorers Tours can try to resolve it straight away.

Later complaints may be sent to info@cityexplorerstours.com. Please include:

  • The lead booker’s name.
  • The booking reference, if any.
  • The date and activity.
  • A description of what happened.
  • The resolution you are seeking.
  • Any relevant documents or photos.

City Explorers Tours will aim to acknowledge and respond within a reasonable time. Making a complaint does not limit the customer’s statutory rights.

29. Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms are governed by the law of Scotland.

The Scottish courts will have jurisdiction over any dispute relating to these terms, without prejudice to any mandatory jurisdictional rights of a consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom or in another country.

30. Changes to these terms

The version of these terms available at the time of booking will apply.

City Explorers Tours may update these terms to reflect legal, operational or commercial changes.

Later changes will not apply retrospectively to a confirmed booking where they would be to the customer’s detriment, unless they are needed to comply with a legal obligation.

31. Severability

If any provision of these terms is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force.

The affected provision will be interpreted or replaced, to the extent permitted by law, by one that achieves a similar result and is legally valid.
