Kirks and Graveyards
The most beautiful kirks and graveyards in Edinburgh
You can find many churches, or ‘kirks’ in the local dialect, all around Edinburgh, especially in the Old Town, where St Giles’ Cathedral, the High Kirk of Scotland, is one of the most significant.
St Giles Cathedral
Visit St Giles’ Cathedral to see one of the most beautiful churches in the city. It is the High Kirk of the Church of Scotland, which was a key location especially during the Scottish Reformation.
Greyfriars Kirk
Greyfriars Kirk has played a key role in Scottish history, with several significant events happening there, but now you might have heard of it due to the story of the famous dog, Greyfriars Bobby.
Canongate Kirk
You can see Canongate Kirk near Holyrood Palace, as it is the palace’s parish church, as well as that of Edinburgh Castle, and still hosts various Royal functions to this day.
Tron Kirk
Located in the middle of the Royal Mile, the Tron Kirk is one of the most recognisable churches in the Old Town. No longer used for religious functions, you can now browse a market inside.
St Margaret's Chapel
St Margaret’s Chapel is the oldest building remaining in Edinburgh, dating from c. 1130, located inside Edinburgh Castle.
The Hub
Formerly a Church of Scotland building, it remains one of the most characteristic buildings of Edinburgh, with its silhouette visible from all around the Old Town.
